Notre Dame of Maryland University (NDMU) has taken a significant step towards enhancing its health sciences curriculum by completing a change-in-ownership step with Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH). This agreement aids in the progression towards a future merger aiming to incorporate MUIH’s graduate-level programs into a new School of Integrative Health at NDMU. The institutions’ strategy to merge began with an announcement in October 2023, with MUIH offering specialized programs in areas including nutrition, Ayurveda, and acupuncture. NDMU aims to create the nation’s first comprehensive university with a dedicated school for integrative health. MUIH will remain independently authorized and accredited during the transition, with Dr. Christina Sax stepping in as interim president. With this merger, expected to finalize in 2025, NDMU is set to expand its health sciences programs reinforcing its leadership role in healthcare education as articulated by NDMU’s president, Dr. Marylou Yam. The expanded curriculum is poised to promote interprofessional understanding and collaboration between integrative and conventional healthcare to enhance individual and community well-being.
