WestJet Group has announced a six-month delay in its planned integration of Sunwing Airlines into WestJet, shifting the target date to April 27, 2025. Originally scheduled for October 26, 2024, the integration will now coincide with the summer 2025 schedule. Both airlines will maintain regular operations through the winter 2024/2025. Despite the delay, WestJet aims to incorporate much of the Sunwing operations by the original timeline, with union member integration happening in phases. WestJet acquired Sunwing Airlines and Sunwing Vacations in 2023, part of its strategy to capture a larger share of the Canadian leisure market. The merged entity plans to serve 39 Latin American and Caribbean destinations in 2024, expanding its market share to 45%. WestJet’s current fleet consists of 179 aircraft, while Sunwing operates 22 planes, plus two leased aircraft from Smartwings.
