Uniti Group Inc.’s CEO, Kenny Gunderman, has announced that the company’s upcoming $13.4 billion acquisition of Windstream Holdings Inc. will bolster Uniti’s status as a leading fiber-based communication provider. The merger is projected to close by mid-2025. With the combined strength of the two Little Rock-based companies, Uniti will become the largest independent fiber provider in the U.S., offering nearly 220,000 route miles of fiber across 46 states. Despite the potential for job redundancies, Gunderman emphasized the focus of the deal is on expanding broadband services to major companies like Amazon, Google, Verizon, Microsoft, and Meta. Governor Sarah Sanders also emphasized the economic benefits of the merger for Arkansas. Analysts note the investment community’s skepticism, reflected in Uniti’s stock price halving since the deal’s announcement. Originating from an Alltel Corp. spin-off, this merger marks a reunion of the two companies. Regulatory approval is pending.
